You can rely on Julia Donaldson to bring us quality children’s fiction and this is definitely true of The Singing Mermaid, whose rhyming text will pair beautifully with the jaunty mermaids as they dance with the words and sea. With mermaids often seen as a girl’s domain it’s great to know that Cerrie Burnell has explored issues of race and disability in her book Mermaid, told from the perspective of a young boy. The Messy Mermaid will appeal to boys and girls (not to mention several early years practitioners!) featuring as it does a child whose OCD parents struggle with mess. Then of course there’s always the wealth of classic mermaid stories that little princesses will love to bring to life with a gorgeous wooden mermaid.
